Chapter 14

“Alpha?” Kendrick had come in at some point and I’d missed it, too caught up in the sense of warmth and safety I was feeling in Conall’s arms. He sounded confused and I didn’t blame him. It was probably a strange thing to see Conall hugging human who was virtually a stranger. He inhaled once more before turning and carefully keeping his arm around my back, he faced the reluctant Feral.

“What have you discovered?” I guess we weren’t going to address the human drama just yet.

“Leo says he has made contact with the Butchery and they have a record of the contract but they cannot divulge the particulars. They said the shaman was an asshole so no one will mourn his death, but he was specifically requested and the pay was considered worth the danger.” Conall let out a frustrated breath.

“Nothing else? No other leads? Perhaps I need to visit the Butchery and see what they have to say when faced with a pissed off Alpha.”

“He only got that much because he bribed the clerk. They won’t give out any more information. You know that. They’d lose too much business if their clients couldn’t trust them to keep quiet.”

“Um. Are there only Goblins at the Butchery? It sounds like the clerk wasn’t above taking money to give up what he knew. Maybe more money would help? I’ve heard that Goblins are easily persuaded with the right incentive.” Kendrick glanced at Conall who nodded his permission for the Feral to answer me.

“That’s true, which is why they also have Gnomes working there. They are impossible to bribe and are known to be completely dedicated to their contracts. No one could offer anything that would cause a Gnome to break their word.”

Well. Fuck. I bet I had something that would get the Gnome to tell us what we wanted. But, ugh. The Butchery. It was an even worse name than ‘assassination office’. Fine. I guess as my first act as a potential Cynosure would be to help out my Feral alpha.

“Can you contact the Gnome again? The one who knows about the contract but won’t tell you anything?”

“I could, but what would be the point? He has already made it clear that he won’t help any further.”

“Just contact him please.” Kendrick looked to Conall again who agreed. Kendrick looked at me a little closer before giving a short bow and heading back down the hallway.

“What have you got up your sleeve, pretty Butterfly?” Mateo circled around and snatched me from Conall’s arms, twirling me in place before closing me into his own embrace, hugging me from behind and burying his face in my hair. Faith squeaked and hopped down from where she’d been hiding, rushing over to the chair and running up to perch on the ornate back, watching us all interact.

“I was wondering the same thing myself, Pika. Do you think you can distract the male with the fact that you’re female? I’m sure that has been tried before with females who are more.
